Sydney you are raising some important questions. I think you should bring these questions up in class. Your instructor is a perfect one to facilitate such a discussion, coming as she did from a fine arts background to ultimately becoming a clinical psychologist! I think you are right to question the appropriateness of a poem, and I say go with your gut feeling on that one. Do not bring a poem that you think might have the potential to be offensive or harmful especially in this short term setting when you do not know the poets too well yet. This situation may be represented in your ethics book. But (if not) in the absence of an ethical code, apply the values that guide you. Ask Judy or whomever is there ho can advise you better than I can. It sounds like the experiences you have had so far are leading you to desire some balance, or to be able to see some insight oriented art psychotherapy. I hope you get this is a subsequent experience. However it sounds like you are also getting some good experience with art as therapy; as well as contributing to the studio environment!
